RED COIL CLEANER/ACID

“Red Coil Cleaner / Acid” is a common HVAC supply term for a strong acidic condenser/evaporator coil cleaner used to remove heavy buildup from air conditioning coils.

What it is

This is a professional-strength chemical cleaner (often red-colored) designed to:

• Break down oxidation, corrosion, and mineral scale
• Remove grease, dirt, and heavy grime
• Restore heat transfer efficiency in A/C coils

Where it’s used

• Outdoor condenser coils
• Indoor evaporator coils (in some formulations)
• Commercial HVAC systems with heavy fouling

Why it’s called “acid”

Many red coil cleaners are acid-based (low pH) formulations such as:

• Hydrofluoric-acid blends (older/heavy-duty types)
• Organic acid blends (safer modern versions)

The acid helps dissolve:

• Aluminum oxidation on coils
• Hard water scale
• Cement-like dirt buildup

Important safety notes

• Highly corrosive if misused
• Must be diluted or rinsed thoroughly
• Not safe for bare skin or eyes (PPE required)
• Can damage aluminum fins if left too long or over-concentrated
